'Die Hard' and 'Harry Potter' star dies aged 69

Tributes have been paid to British actor Alan Rickman, who has died aged 69.

Rickman, known for his roles as the villain Hans Gruber in Die Hard and Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films, passed away on Thursday morning surrounded by his family and friends.

His agent said Rickman had been battling cancer, but kept his illness a secret from the public and many of his friends.

Friends and fans of Rickman took to social media on Thursday morning to mourn the late actor, including Emma Watson, Paul Rudd and Stephen Fry.
