Arkansas Declares State of Emergency Ahead of 2024 Solar Eclipse

Governor Sanders Approves Funds for Emergency Preparation

Increased Security and Traffic Control Measures to be Implemented

With less than a month until the historic total solar eclipse, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) will host Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and state agency leaders to discuss emergency preparations.

Governor Sanders declared a state of emergency on Friday, releasing $100,000 from the Response and Recovery Fund to assist with the state's response. The emergency declaration allows for enhanced coordination among state agencies and the deployment of additional resources.

In a press release, Governor Sanders stated, "The solar eclipse is a significant event for our state, and we want to ensure that we are fully prepared to manage the influx of visitors and maintain public safety." She emphasized the importance of collaboration among state agencies to effectively respond to the anticipated increase in traffic, security needs, and other potential challenges.

ARDOT officials have announced plans for increased security measures during the eclipse, including a heightened police presence and a ratio of approximately two cameras to one human. They will also implement traffic control measures to manage the expected surge in vehicles, particularly along viewing areas.

Officials urge residents and visitors to be prepared for heavy traffic and potential delays. They recommend arriving early at viewing locations and allowing ample time for travel. Additionally, they remind the public to take precautions against heat and dehydration, as the eclipse will occur during the summer months.
