Matthew Boyd, Guardians hold Dodgers in check
Guardians end Dodgers' nine-game win streak
CLEVELAND -- Matthew Boyd allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings in his Guardians debut as Cleveland held off the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 on Friday night, snapping the National League West leaders' nine-game winning streak. Amed Rosario had two hits and drove in a run, and Jose Ramirez also had two hits for the Guardians.
Making his first start since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, Boyd (1-0) struck out four, walked three and hit a batter. He threw 90 pitches, 54 for strikes.
After Gavin Lux's leadoff double in the first, Boyd retired 10 of the next 12 batters he faced. He ran into trouble in the fourth when he gave up a pair of two-out singles, but he escaped the jam by getting Will Smith to ground out.
Boyd gave up a single to Trea Turner to open the sixth, and after a groundout, he was relieved by Eli Morgan. Morgan allowed a double to Freddie Freeman that put runners on second and third, but he struck out Max Muncy and got Lux to fly out to end the inning.
Tanner Rainey pitched a perfect seventh, and James Karinchak worked around a leadoff walk in the eighth. Emmanuel Clase allowed a one-out single to Trayce Thompson in the ninth, but he struck out two batters to end the game and earn his 18th save.
Tony Gonsolin (16-1) took the loss for the Dodgers. He allowed two runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked one.
The Guardians took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Rosario's RBI single. They made it 2-0 in the fourth when Ramirez singled home Myles Straw.
The Dodgers got on the board in the fifth when Muncy scored on a groundout by Justin Turner.
The Dodgers had a chance to tie the game in the seventh when Freeman drew a walk with two outs, but Muncy grounded out to end the inning.
The Guardians improved to 66-65 with the win, while the Dodgers fell to 86-46.
