Dominican Republic's Canal RCN switches to a remote production model
Colombia-based RCN replaces in-person productions with remote production systems and the use of cloud platforms to broadcast live news and other content.
Cable and satellite television network Canal RCN has started using a remote production model and cloud-based tools to replace in-person productions, with the service's news division reporting that it is the first Colombian producer to implement this technology for live content.
RCN says the decision to invest in the technology was pushed by its leaders and that it was helped by its parent company, the Organización Ardila Lülle, which provided "strategic guidelines" and "the necessary economic support".
RCN's head of production, Dr. Jorge MartÃnez, said the organization has been continuously innovating for 62 years and that it is always "looking for solutions that meet the challenges and needs of our audiences".
Martinez added: "Our success has taught us that everything is possible if we dare and bet on developing our own solutions. Our move to the cloud allows us to produce our content more efficiently and economically, reaching wider audiences and strengthening our leadership in the competitive television industry region."
The remote production system allows RCN to produce its newscasts, including its famous "News of the Seven", from remote locations through a digital cloud-based platform. The system includes the use of robotic cameras, prompters with integrated teleprompters, and professional audio equipment to maintain the quality of the newscasts.
RCN has also invested in training its staff on the use of the new equipment and processes and in creating a new production team specialized in remote production. The team is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the broadcasts and the quality of the content.
The new remote production system has several advantages for RCN. It allows the network to reduce production costs, as it no longer needs to rent studios or hire large production teams. It also allows RCN to be more flexible in its production, as it can now produce content from anywhere with an internet connection.
The move to remote production is part of RCN's broader strategy to digitize its operations. The network has already invested in a new digital content platform and is working to develop new digital products and services.
RCN's move to remote production is a significant development in the Colombian television industry. It is the first Colombian producer to implement this technology for live content, and it is likely to be followed by other networks. The move to remote production is a sign of the changing television landscape, as networks look for ways to reduce costs and be more flexible in their production.
